Reading Seed Workshops for Volunteer Coaches Reading Seed is a children's literacy program in Tucson that trains volunteers to coach students with their reading skills. Franklin Furnace Announces Open Call for Artists Franklin Furnace Archive Inc.'s mission is "to present, preserve, interpret, proselytize, and advocate on behalf of avant-garde art, especially forms that may be vulnerable due to institutional neglect, their ephemeral nature, or politically unpopular content." As part of that mission, Franklin Furnace annually awards project-based grants to emerging artists, allowing them to produce major works in New York. Works may engage the Internet as an art medium and/or venue. Artists from all areas of the world are encouraged to apply. Full-time students are ineligible. NEW ART Performance Project Seeks Participants
The Tucson Community Food Bank & NEW ARTiculations Dance Theatre Present:
A Participatory Performance about What We Eat and Why Seeks Community Participants. Want to dance? Have some good food stories to share? Feel passionate about what you eat? The project uses modern dance and community stories to reveal how food connects us to each other, our environment, and our everyday lives. Participants of all ages and abilities are welcome to share their stories, shape performance material, and perform. No prior dance experience is necessary! Rehearsals will take place Sundays, 3:30-5:00pm, beginning with a mandatory introductory session will be held on Sunday, Feb. 17 at The DanceLoft, 620 E. 19th St, Ste. 150 (warehouse unit on the corner of 19th St. and Euclid Ave.). “We Are What We Eat” will be performed Sunday, April 27 at the Tucson Botanical Gardens with additional performances to be announced. Nevada Arts Council: Artist in Residence Roster The Nevada Arts Council is now accepting applications from artists interested in serving on the FY2009-11 Artist in Residence (AIR) Roster. Artists living both in and outside the State of Nevada may apply. AIR Roster applicants must: (1) be a professional artist in the literary arts, dance, folk arts, music, storytelling, theater, design arts, visual arts, media/film and interdisciplinary arts; (2) have academic training and/or experience in the field of education; (3) have U.S. citizenship or legal residence status; and (4) be at least 21 years old and not a degree-seeking student in the field in which application is made. The AIR program provides students, teachers and communities with direct hands-on arts experiences through personal interaction with working artists. AIR sponsors (schools, public institutions, and nonprofit organizations) work directly with artists to create engaging and creative activities for residency participants. Postmark deadline: April 1. Chelsea International Fine Art Competition Agora Gallery of New York City is organizing its 23rd annual juried competition and we would like to present this opportunity to as many artists as possible. Awards valued at Thirty Eight Thousand dollars ($38,000) will be distributed as follows: exhibition at the Chelsea gallery, cash awards, Internet exposure and publicity in ARTisSpectrum magazine. The exhibition will take place in Chelsea, New York City. The gallery/artist split will be 50/50. Flamenco for Kids! Talented artist offers children's classes in dynamic art form of flamenco... Tucson's own Mele Martinez, former member of The American Flamenco Repertory Company, will offer classes this Spring semester for children ages 5-12 along with regular adult courses.  Mele Martinez has taught courses for children at Festival Flamenco Internacional and The National Conservatory of Flamenco and was commissioned to choreograph works for Niños Flamencos, a premiere children's flamenco company.  Children will focus on rhythm, coordination, body-movement, and music fundamentals while learning to sing, dance, and do palmas (hand-clapping) for flamenco's most popular songs.
